Getting around Lanzarote
The airport (ACE) is ten minutes from Arrecife and fifteen from Puerto del Carmen. There is a public bus, taxis and car hire — and for almost everything else on the island you will need a car.
Public transport
In the Canaries the bus is called a guagua. You will see the word on stops and timetables.
- 161
Aeropuerto – Puerto del Carmen – Puerto Calero – Yaiza – Playa Blanca
The line connecting the airport with the two southern resort areas. Around 18 stops end to end.
~59 minfrom 3,30 €
- 22 / 23
Aeropuerto – Arrecife
To reach the capital. From the Arrecife bus station you can connect to the rest of the island.
~15 minfrom 1,40 €
- 6
Arrecife – Playa Honda – Tías – Puerto del Carmen – Yaiza – Playa Blanca
The alternative to the 161/162 when you are not coming from the airport: it stops in more villages and takes a little longer, but covers the same southern corridor.
~65 minfrom 4,00 €
- Timetables and live positions are in the free IntercityBus Lanzarote app.
- You pay the driver on board. If you plan several trips, the bono travel card works out cheaper.
- Costa Teguise has no direct line to the airport: you need to change in Arrecife. Line 1 covers Arrecife–Costa Teguise in about 26 minutes.
- For Timanfaya, Papagayo or Famara the bus is not a realistic option. You need a car.
- For the north without a car: line 9 follows the coast to Órzola (passing close to Jameos del Agua) and line 7 goes up to Haría and Máguez, a short hop from Mirador del Río.

Taxis
A taxi is the alternative when the bus does not reach your stop, is not worth the wait, or you are travelling with luggage. All of them run on a meter and take cash or card. There is no Uber, Cabify or FreeNow on the island: you call one or pick one up at a rank.

- Interurban fares are set by the regional government, not negotiated freely: if the metered total looks off, ask for the breakdown.
- Sundays and public holidays usually carry a surcharge, as does pickup at the airport or the port.
- In the resort areas there are fixed ranks; outside them, the norm is to phone one rather than flag one down.
- Tipping is not expected or required in Spain. Rounding up is a courtesy, not a rule.
